Refractory WMoNbVTa high-entropy alloy as a diffusion barrier between a molybdenum substrate and MoSi2 ceramic coating

Coating a MoSi2 ceramic layer on Mo substrates is an excellent strategy to enhance their oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Suppressing elemental interdiffusion across the Mo/MoSi2 interface very important for extending service life of substrates. The present study attempted develop WMoNbVTa high-entropy alloy (HEA) as diffusion barrier interface. A new double-layer WMoNbVTa/MoSi2 coating was fabricated through two-step spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. Then, behaviors Mo/WMoNbVTa/MoSi2 and systems 1200–1500 °C were investigated comparatively. HEA powder with single body-centered cubic (BCC) structure prepared mechanical alloying intermediate successfully using milled powder. After long-term oxidation, two layers Mo5Si3 (WMoNbVTa)5Si3 appeared interface, while no apparent zone found Mo/WMoNbVTa growth rate thickness much lower than that effectively suppressed elements between substrate coating.
